To support young's people education and upbringing in emerging countries, Marubeni has established Marubeni Scholarship Foundation mainly in the ASEAN region, including Indonesia, established in 1999 under the name of "Yayasan Beasiswa Marubeni". The scholarship is an application of Marubeni Corporation's corporate social responsibility (CSR), which shows company's commitment to support the poor students with good academic achievement as well as to strengthen its social contribution to Indonesia. Sriwijaya University has become one of the company's CSR targets by having disbursed scholarship to the university since 2008.
November 20, 2013 marked the sixth year of scholarship granting to Sriwijaya University by Marubeni Corporation (which has two subsidiaries in Palembang i.e. PT Tanjung Enim Lestari and PT Musi Hutan Persada) through Yayasan Beasiswa Marubeni. The foundation intends to support and keep the spirit of the students to study and learn in order to make them finish their study on schedule. The academic achievement of the students is also being encouraged in order to increase the students' quality of the university and the Indonesian's young people in general. The scholarship was officially submitted by the Chairman of Advisory Board of Yayasan Beasiswa Marubeni as well as the President Director of PT Marubeni Indonesia, Mr. Naoto Itakura, accompanied by the Finance Director of PT Marubeni Indonesia, Mr. Masashi Terada, took place at the Rectorate Building of Sriwijaya University.
The scholarship criteria among of which are the students should have the minimun GPA of 2.25 and their parents' income should be under IDR 2 million per month. For the study year of 2013-2014, Marubeni allocates IDR 4 million per year for each student given quarterly to 27 students. Meanwhile, the Rector of Sriwijaya University, Mrs. Badia Perizade. was warmly welcoming Yayasan Beasiswa Marubeni's program to the students of Sriwijaya University. She asked the students to use the scholarship wisely and encouraged them to increase their academic achievement. Jandri Pratama, a student majoring in Accounting, representing all of the scholarship recipients, said his gratitude to Marubeni for having been granting scholarship to the students of Sriwijaya University, "Thank you for Yayasan Beasiswa marubeni for giving me the scholarship, so that I can really focus on my study without thinking about tuition fee anymore", he said. Itakura also added that education is the most important thing to achieve a better quality of life in the future which also can bring Indonesia to be a better country.
